Schema markup is one of those areas of SEO that often sounds more technical than it really is.

What is schema markup?

A page with poor content, technical problems or little authority will not suddenly perform well simply because structured data has been added. Schema works best when it sits alongside the other fundamentals that make a website useful, accessible and easy for search engines to crawl and understand.

Can schema markup improve your Google rankings?

Schema markup is not a direct shortcut to higher rankings.

That is not how it works.

Google uses structured data to help understand content and determine eligibility for certain search features, but correctly implementing schema does not guarantee that a page will rank higher or that a rich result will appear.

A useful, authoritative and technically strong page may benefit from having structured data in place, but schema cannot compensate for weak content or poor SEO fundamentals.

For organisations deciding where to focus their time and budget, improving important pages, fixing technical issues and creating useful content will normally have a greater impact than trying to add every possible schema type across the website.

Schema is valuable because it strengthens the information architecture around good content. It should not be treated as a replacement for good content itself.

What are rich results?

Rich results are enhanced search appearances that can display additional information beyond a standard search listing.

Depending on the content and the structured data Google currently supports, this could include additional information relating to products, events, job vacancies, recipes or other eligible page types.

Structured data can help make a page eligible for these features, but eligibility is not the same as a guarantee.

Google still decides whether a richer result is appropriate for a particular search, and that can depend on factors including the query, device, location and wider search context.

That is why schema should not be approached as a way of forcing Google to display something in a particular format. It is better understood as a way of giving search engines better information to work with.

Not every type of schema creates a rich result

Schema.org contains a much larger vocabulary than the structured data types Google currently uses for rich results.

That distinction can easily be missed.

A schema type may be perfectly valid within Schema.org without creating a special appearance in Google Search. This does not necessarily make the markup pointless, because it can still provide useful machine-readable context, but website owners should not assume that adding any type of schema will create something visible in search results.

This becomes particularly relevant when using SEO plugins that present a long list of schema options.

More schema is not automatically better schema.

The objective should be to accurately describe the content that already exists on the page, rather than selecting additional markup simply because the option is available.

Why schema matters for businesses

For a typical business website, schema markup can help provide clearer information around the organisation itself and the content it publishes.

Organisation details are an obvious starting point, but depending on the website there may also be opportunities to use structured data for articles, events, job vacancies, products, local business information and breadcrumbs.

The right implementation depends entirely on what the website actually contains.

A professional services business does not need to force every service page into a Product schema type simply because that option exists. Equally, a website should not create review markup where genuine reviews are not present on the page.

The strongest use of schema is normally the most accurate one.

It should describe the organisation and its content as they really exist, rather than being used to manufacture signals that are not supported by the visible page.

Why schema matters for charities

Charity websites often contain a particularly broad range of information.

There may be service pages, fundraising campaigns, articles, events, vacancies, team members, volunteering opportunities and advice resources, all serving different audiences and different purposes.

Structured data can help provide additional context around some of that information where appropriate.

For example, article markup can help identify editorial content, event data may be relevant for public events, and organisation information can help reinforce details about the charity itself.

The objective is not to add as much markup as possible. It is to make the website easier to understand.

A charity website already has to help very different audiences understand where to go next. Someone looking for support has different needs from somebody wanting to donate, volunteer or attend an event. Clear structure helps those people navigate the website, while structured data can provide machines with additional context around the information contained within it.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

The growth of AI search has created renewed interest in structured data.

Businesses increasingly want to know whether schema can improve their chances of appearing in Google AI features, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI-generated answers.

The answer is more nuanced than simply saying yes or no.

Structured data gives machines clearer information about what a page contains, so it makes sense to consider it part of a well-structured and technically strong website. However, there is no special schema type that guarantees an organisation will appear in an AI-generated answer.

Google’s own guidance around AI search continues to build on many of the same fundamentals that already matter for traditional search. Useful content, crawlability, technical quality, clear information and authority remain important.

Schema can support that wider picture by making information easier to interpret, but it does not create expertise or authority that is not already there.

For organisations thinking about AI visibility, structured data should therefore be considered part of the technical foundation rather than an AI optimisation shortcut.

Schema should match what is actually on the page

Structured data should accurately reflect the visible content on a webpage.

This sounds obvious, but it is one of the most important principles when implementing schema.

If a website marks up reviews, those reviews should genuinely exist. If an event changes date, the structured information should be updated. If a job vacancy closes, the schema should reflect that. If organisation information changes, the data being provided to search engines should change with it.

Using schema to describe information that is hidden, misleading or inaccurate can create problems rather than benefits.

That is why schema should be treated as part of website maintenance rather than something that is added once and forgotten.

As the website evolves, the structured information behind it needs to remain accurate too.

More schema is not always better

WordPress and modern SEO plugins have made adding schema significantly easier.

That is useful, but it can also create a temptation to select as many schema types as possible.

There is little benefit in doing that.

A better approach is to start with the page itself.

What is the page actually about?

What type of content does it contain?

Is there an appropriate structured data type that accurately describes it?

An article will often benefit from Article markup. A genuine public event may have relevant Event markup. A job vacancy may use JobPosting data. A product page may have appropriate Product information.

Other pages may not require anything beyond the broader structured data already being generated for the website.

The objective is not to maximise the amount of schema on a page. It is to make the information that is there clearer and more accurate.

What schema should your website use?

There is no universal set of schema types that every website should implement.

The appropriate setup depends on the type of organisation, the content being published and the functionality of the website.

A business website may use organisation information, breadcrumbs and article markup across relevant sections.

An ecommerce website is likely to make much greater use of Product structured data.

A recruitment website may rely heavily on JobPosting markup.

A charity with a large events programme may have genuine opportunities around Event structured data.

The right answer should come from reviewing the website rather than following a generic checklist.

This is why schema is best considered as part of a wider technical SEO review. It needs to reflect the structure and purpose of the website rather than being treated as a separate exercise.

How does schema work in WordPress?

WordPress has made schema considerably easier to manage than it once was.

SEO plugins such as Rank Math can automatically generate structured data and allow different schema types to be configured across posts and pages. For many organisations, this removes the need to manually write JSON-LD or edit website code every time structured data is required.

However, installing an SEO plugin does not automatically mean the implementation is correct.

Organisation details still need to be configured accurately. The correct schema types need to be selected for different content. Individual pages may require adjustments, and other plugins or themes can sometimes generate their own structured data alongside the SEO plugin.

That can result in duplication or conflicting information if the website is not reviewed properly.

It is another example of why ongoing WordPress support and maintenance should involve more than simply keeping plugins updated.

Technical SEO, website structure, compatibility and the way different tools interact all need ongoing attention.

How do you check whether schema markup is working?

There are two useful tools for checking structured data.

Google’s Rich Results Test can be used to see whether Google can detect supported structured data and whether a page may be eligible for relevant rich-result features.

The Schema.org Validator provides a broader check against the Schema.org vocabulary itself.

The difference between the two is useful.

Google’s tool is primarily concerned with the structured data types it currently supports for search features, while the Schema.org Validator can review a wider range of markup that may not have a corresponding rich result in Google.

Testing should also form part of ongoing website maintenance.

A template update, plugin change or redesign can sometimes affect structured data without it being immediately obvious to somebody looking at the page. Checking important templates periodically can help make sure the information being provided remains accurate.

Schema is only one part of technical SEO

It is possible for a website to have perfectly valid schema and still perform poorly.

The site might load slowly.

Important pages may be difficult to crawl.

The content may not answer the questions audiences are actually asking.

Internal linking could be weak.

Mobile performance could be poor.

The website might generate traffic without providing a clear route towards an enquiry or another meaningful action.

Schema cannot solve those problems.

It is one part of the wider technical foundation behind how a website is discovered and understood.

A website can have technically correct structured data while still having opportunities in all of those other areas.

So, why is schema markup important?

Schema markup is important because it gives search engines and other machines a clearer way to understand what the information on a webpage represents.

What it cannot do is replace the fundamentals.

Good content still matters. Technical SEO still matters. Website performance still matters. Authority still matters. And as AI becomes a bigger part of how people discover organisations online, clear and useful information is likely to matter even more.

For businesses and charities, the sensible approach is not to chase every possible schema type. It is to make sure the structured data being used is accurate, appropriate and aligned with the content people can actually see.
